In the exhibition 1000 JAHRE POLTERGEIZ, images, marketing slogans, and branding tactics have been appropriated from SATURN and MEDIA MARKT, two of the largest consumer electronics stores in Germany, then modified and remixed in the form of computer print paintings. Present in the works are various processes utilizing the “high culture” medium of painting, the omnipresent excess of digital manipulation, and the “low culture” medium cheap poster aesthetics. Oddly enough the two department store chains belong to the same mother firm and utilize similar strategies to market their products through fictitious characters and faked scenarios. Within the installations on view the respective media mascots: the SATURN femme fatale and the gang-leader cowboy of Team Media Markt have been transformed into absurd phantasms from the story of Revelations. The GEIZ IST GEIL girl has been digitally manipulated into a narcissistic cyborg medusa, and directly across from her is the TEAM MEDIA techno cowboy zombie. Both figures call upon several references, yet through the overabundance of visual signs and over-saturated symbology it becomes unclear what sort of values to assign to them. The audience is enveloped into an absurd visual narrative much like an “ueber” dimensional theme park, simultaneously threatened and entertained by its crude and confusing spectacle.
